Sun: Full sun to partial shade

Water Needs: Low to moderate; drought tolerant once established

Height: 6–15" tall (occasionally up to ~24" in favorable conditions)

Spread: 6–18"

Spacing: 12–18" apart

Bloom Time: May–August (most commonly June–August depending on elevation and climate)

Bloom Description: Dense clusters or whorls of small blue-purple to lavender tubular flowers held on short upright stems; individual flowers are about ¼–¾" long with a pale or white throat and characteristic hairy “beard” typical of beardtongues.

Maintenance: Low; deadheading can slightly extend blooming, though many gardeners leave spent flower stalks to allow natural reseeding. Plants prefer lean soils and may decline in overly rich or wet conditions.

Soil Drainage: Requires well-drained soils; performs best in sandy, gravelly, or rocky soils and does poorly in heavy or poorly drained sites.

Wildlife Value: Highly attractive to native bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds; provides nectar for numerous pollinator species including bumble bees and specialist mason bees.

Garden Use: Excellent for rock gardens, alpine plantings, dry meadows, slopes, and native pollinator gardens. Its compact size and clusters of blue-purple flowers make it well suited for naturalistic plantings and xeriscapes, especially in well-drained mountain or prairie landscapes.
