Type: Perennial herbaceous wildflower
Sun: Full sun; tolerates light partial shade but flowers best in full sun
Water Needs: Low to moderate; drought tolerant once established and adapted to dry, rocky environments
Height: 1–3' tall (flower stalks may reach up to about 3–4')
Spread: 1–2'
Spacing: 18–36" apart
Bloom Time: February–June depending on elevation; typically spring to early summer
Bloom Description: Tall spikes of vivid scarlet to bright red tubular flowers arranged along upright stems, often oriented to one side of the stalk. The nectar-rich blooms are highly visible and provide an early-season splash of color in dry landscapes.
Maintenance: Low; remove spent flower stalks after blooming if desired or allow plants to self-seed. Avoid overwatering and heavy soils, as plants prefer dry conditions.
Soil Drainage: Requires well-drained soil; performs best in sandy, gravelly, or rocky soils and is sensitive to overly wet conditions.
Wildlife Value: Excellent nectar source for hummingbirds and also visited by butterflies and other pollinators. Seeds may provide food for birds.
Garden Use: Ideal for xeriscapes, native plant gardens, rock gardens, and dry slopes. Its striking red flowers create strong vertical accents and provide an important early-season nectar source in arid and semi-arid landscapes.
